2024 GMC Savana Expert Review

In contrast to its luxurious Denali models and wild Hummer EV, GMC also builds the Savana commercial van. This work vehicle is sold as a passenger shuttle, cargo van, or as a cutaway cab for upfitting. In any configuration, the Savana is simple and straightforward. For 2024, the Savana gains updated powertrain choices. Only its grille design distinguishes it from the Chevrolet Express . Competitors include the Ram ProMaster, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and Ford Transit .

What We Think
Don't expect frills in the 2024 GMC Savana—this van is built to get the job done, and that's about it. But when competitors work just as hard and offer more refinement and features, why not get one of those?
The Savana's tried-and-true reputation is a potential reason. Its relatively compact size and available V-8 engine are other outliers among commercial vans.
But some of the Savana's rivals are literally decades newer—needless to say, a lot has changed in that time. Sure, you might not want a commercial van for neat features and nice driving manners, but if you can have those, wouldn't you? We think it's time for an update.
Savana Engine Options
For 2024 the standard 4.3-liter V-6 engine, which produces 276 hp and 298 lb-ft of torque, is newly joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission. That could help improve fuel economy from the six-speed used previously. The optional 6.6-liter V-8 engine makes 401 hp and 464 lb-ft and continues to route output through the eight-speed automatic. All Savana configurations are RWD.
Electric GMC Savana?
Given the work van segment's shift toward electrification and General Motor's EV ambitions, it seems likely that a new all-electric Savana is in the works. Rumors suggest that such a vehicle will arrive for 2026, after the current Savana is canceled for 2025. Those interested in an electric van from General Motors should consider the BrightDrop Zevo until then.
Wheelbase Lengths
The standard wheelbase measures 135.2 inches long, while the long wheelbase is 155.2 inches long. Overall vehicle length is 224.1 and 244.1 inches for those options, respectively.
In cutaway cab configuration, GMC offers wheelbases measuring 139.0, 159.0, and 177.0 inches. These support overall lengths of 247.2, 276.2, and 285.3 inches, respectively.
Safety Features
The Savana may have the fewest driver assist and active safety features of any vehicle currently in production. Forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and cruise control are only included on certain configurations.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
The Savana's cargo floor measures 126.8 inches long with the standard wheelbase or 146.8 inches with the long wheelbase. The cargo hold in both is 52.5 inches wide and 53.8 inches tall. This leads to 239.4 and 283.6 cubic feet of capacity for the short- and long-wheelbase vans, respectively.
In passenger van specification, the Savana comes with four rows providing 12-seat capacity with the short wheelbase, or five rows for 15-seat capacity with the long wheelbase.
Technology
Rudimentary tech features indicate how old the Savana is. Its head unit uses a small LCD display to control the MP3 player and AM/FM radio. A single USB port can be equipped as an option. Bluetooth and satellite radio are part of an option package that also adds steering wheel audio controls.
