Cargo variants get standard D-ring tie downs and AM/FM radio with an aux port.

Vehicle Summary

The 2016 GMC Savana is a large commercial vehicle that's available in both passenger and cargo variants. Passenger variants can accommodate 12 to 15 passengers in the LS and LT trims of the 2500 and 3500 series.

Overview

Three engines are available in the 2016 Savana a 4.8-liter V-8 rated at 285 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, a CNG-capable 6.0-liter V-8 with 329 hp and 373 lb-ft (282 hp and 320 lb-ft on CNG), and 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 making 260 hp and 525 lb-ft. All engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Depending on the wheelbase length and powertrain choice, the Savana can tow up to 10,000 pounds when properly equipped. The regular-length 2500 Series has a cargo volume of 239.78 cubic feet while the extended-length 3500 can hold up to 284.4 cubic feet. Passenger variants have less cargo volume at 92.1 cubic feet with seats in place for the 2500 Series and 216.2 cubic feet with them removed. The 3500 Series has more space at 127.2 cubic feet with seats in place and 252.8 cubic feet with them removed.

Safety

All variants of the Savana come with dual front, front-side, and side curtain airbags as standard.

Trims, Packages, and What's Standard

Base LS trims come with AM/FM radio with MP3 playback capability, vinyl seat upholstery, a driver information display, and a 120-volt power outlet. Optional equipment include an engine block heater, a 145-amp alternator, chrome exterior accents, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, keyless entry, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors.

What We Think

In a 2011 First Test review, we said that the Savana's available diesel powertrain provides plenty of punch to haul around plenty of equipment with ease. However, the van's steering isn't very precise and the interior doesn't impress. Additionally, the Savana gets expensive pretty quickly when optioned with extra-cost features, making them a weak value proposition when compared to their counterparts.

Cool Fact

Except for a couple minor changes, the Savana and the Chevrolet Express are essentially the same vehicle with different badges.
