2014 Chevrolet Spark Expert Review

Reviewed by Austin Lott

New for 2014

For the 2014 model year, Chevrolet introduced the brand-new Spark EV, an all-electric version of the Spark that has an EPA-rated range of 82 miles on a single charge, and goes from 0-60 in under eight seconds. Also introduced on the gas-powered 2014 Spark is a CVT that replaces the four-speed automatic from the 2013 model.

Vehicle Overview

The Chevrolet Spark is the automaker's city car, a small, fuel-efficient four-door hatchback that seats four comfortably and has an all-electric powertrain option. The Spark sits at the bottom of Chevrolet's lineup, below the Sonic sedan and four-door hatchback.

Summary

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark comes with a 1.2-liter I-4 engine which makes 84 hp and 83 lb-ft of torque, while getting an EPA-estimated 30-31/39 mpg city/highway. The Spark comes with a five-speed manual, or an optional CVT, though we suggest sticking with the manual. The Chevrolet represents a value in the segment with its standard 10 airbags, power windows, and power mirrors.

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark has a four-star safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and is considered a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS for 2014. The electric vehicle variant has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or evaluated by the IIHS.

Spark EV

For buyers who want a greener vehicle and don't have a lengthy commute -- and who live in California or Oregon -- the Spark EV is a viable option. The 1.2-liter I-4 is replaced with a permanent-magnet AC motor which produces 140 hp and an amazing 400 lb-ft of torque. We wonder if it should be called the Spark SS. The EPA estimates range to be 82 miles on a single charge, and charge times depend on which charger you use: the new SAE Combo DC Fast Charger will go from no charge to 80 percent in about 20 minutes, while a standard 240-volt charge will take about seven hours, or around 17 hours for a full charge at 120 volts..

What We Think

The Chevrolet Spark is a good value for the price, and has a surprisingly roomy rear seat for such a small car. With 35.2 inches of rear legroom, and more cargo space than its competition, the Spark is actually usable. In a First Test of a 2013 Chevrolet Spark we said, "[it] may not be the fastest car on the road, its space-efficient design, standard features, and surprisingly fun-to-drive demeanor may make it the best bang for the city car buck."
