1986 Fox-Body Mustang's Front Suspension in a Bind | Launch at Famoso Dragstrip

Project T-top Coupe’s launch in its first run at Famoso Dragstrip for HOT ROD Garage Day 2024. With KW Suspension’s dual-spring front coilovers installed, the 60-foot elapsed time was 1.47 seconds. Pay attention to the front end and note how it does not extend upward at takeoff. The bind created by a too-short and stiff spring package is the reason for this.

After making slight compression/rebound changes on each Strange coilover, we believe the Mustang’s second lap might have been better to 60 feet than the first, had HOT ROD senior editor KJ Jones not muffed the gas/brake footwork. Despite the mistake, it’s clear that Project T-top Coupe’s front suspension is now working the way it should have been for a long, long time.

This was our Mustang’s second blast at HOT ROD Garage Day 2024, where again, the coupe takes off with no measurable front-end travel (a miniscule “bunny hop,” at best).

HOT ROD Drag Week 2025 once again put the toughest street cars in the country to the test. Over five days and more than 600 miles, racers had to prove they could drive their cars on the street and still lay down serious numbers at the track. From six-second Unlimited cars to 10-second cruisers, the competition was stacked. In the end, Ned Dunphy’s 3,000-hp Dodge Viper was the best of the field, averaging 6.17 at 247 mph to set a new record and lock down the title of America’s Fastest Street Car.
