This was our Mustang’s second blast at HOT ROD Garage Day 2024, where again, the coupe takes off with no measurable front-end travel (a miniscule “bunny hop,” at best).

Say what you want about the Mustang Mach-E, you can’t deny that what Ford has done with the long-awaited Rally version is pretty neat! Raised ride height, all-season tires, and - of course - a little extra oomph! Joe went out to the desert to do something we would’ve thought impossible just a few years ago; hoon a rally-spec electric SUV (which also happens to be called a Mustang!) on the dust and dirt, through sand and rock, across the desert floor and over the mountains. Question is, how did the Mach-E cope?

After making slight compression/rebound changes on each Strange coilover, we believe the Mustang’s second lap might have been better to 60 feet than the first, had HOT ROD senior editor KJ Jones not muffed the gas/brake footwork. Despite the mistake, it’s clear that Project T-top Coupe’s front suspension is now working the way it should have been for a long, long time.

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is stunningly easy to drive fast, a true cheat code for both road and racetrack. At 4,386 pounds, it outweighs the Mustang Dark Horse and Porsche 911 GT3 RS, yet feels planted, stable, and shockingly quick from behind the wheel. With 815 horsepower, 664 lb-ft of torque, custom Michelin Pilot Cup 2 R tires, and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, the GTD delivers relentless grip, massive stopping power, and confidence through every corner. It matches the GT3 RS on high-speed downforce turns and outperforms it in tight, low-speed corners thanks to its wide tires and advanced rear suspension. On the street, the GTD remains forgiving and composed, with adjustable suspension and active aerodynamics that make it livable. Inside, though, the $325,000 Mustang shows its weak spot — an interior closer to a $40,000 car. Still, Ford has already received far more applications than available build slots for this limited-production machine. Ford calls it “a supercar with the soul of a Mustang,” and the GTD proves it on track and on the road.
