2013 Toyota Land Cruiser Expert Review

Reviewed by Staff Writer

The 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser continues a 60-year heritage of impressive off-roaders, and has raised its game (and MSRP), as it now comes with an array of standard features that puts it on the map with its more luxurious mate, the Lexus LX 570.

Among the many goodies that now come standard in the Land Cruiser are voice-activated navigation, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, color-matched rear spoiler, rain-sensing windshield wipers, center-console cooler box, headlamp cleaners, leather-trimmed steering wheel, multi-information display, Bluetooth, rear backup camera, and a JBL audio system. The cabin has also been upgraded with better quality materials. Nothing has been changed mechanically, meaning the Land Cruiser retains its body-on-frame construction and high-tech Kinetic Dynamic Suspension (KDSS), which allows the anti-roll bars to disengage to allow for added wheel articulation when off-roading. The Land Cruiser has also been transformed into a more capable rock crawler thanks to a new Multi-terrain Select system that acts like a limited slip differential and adjusts wheel slip. Also new is an updated version of the CRAWL Control system with Off-Road Turn Assist.

Carrying over the 2013 Toyota Land Cruiser is the 5.7-liter V-8 that generates 381-hp and 401-lb-ft of torque. That engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. EPA rated at 13/18 mpg city/highway, the luxurious off-roader doesn't come without consequences. It's this that makes something like the Mercedes-Benz GL350 Blutec diesel seem more appealing. Also, despite its huge size, the Land Cruiser offers a modest 82 cu-ft for cargo capacity. However, the Land Cruiser has an awesome track record. The last time we tested a Land Cruiser , we were impressed by its 0-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds.

What's New for 2013

Chrome accents on the doors, redesigned front grille, new HID headlights and LED daytime running lights, and new 18-inch wheels. Interior changes include ventilated front seats, upgraded leather seats, and a revised instrument panel. Adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, and Toyota's new Entune infotainment system are standard.
