2013 Nissan Armada Expert Review

Vehicle Overview

The 2013 Nissan Armada is the largest SUV the automaker currently offers, with three rows of seating and a truck-like body-on-frame construction that is rugged, but also results in a slightly choppy ride on the highway. The Armada launched into the market almost a decade ago and despite a recent refresh, the large SUV is starting to show its age.

"The available tech features as well as the user interface as a whole are hopelessly dated," we noted in a recent test of an Armada Platinum 4WD model. "The 'Music Box,' for example, may have been cutting edge in 2008, but today, the compact flash medium it uses has been largely abandoned by almost everyone; voice control for the Bluetooth calling and navigation functions does not include voice commands for radio tuning; and the tuning knob for the audio controls is a far reach across the Armada's expansive dashboard."

The powertrain includes one engine, a 5.6-liter V-8 engine that produces 317 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a five-speed automatic; rear or four-wheel-drive configurations are available. We found the powertrain to be adequate, with a 0-60 mph time of just under seven seconds (achieved in a 2008 4WD model). "The only time the engine's dated tuning shows itself is during wide-open-throttle acceleration and passing," we noted. The 2013 Nissan Armada is available in three trim levels: SV, SL, and Platinum. Standard items include Bluetooth connectivity, a parking assist system, power-adjustable front seats, and automatic climate control. The range-topping Platinum model is loaded with features including leather seating surfaces, navigation, a rear DVD entertainment system, moonroof, rear backup camera, and 20-inch rims.

New for 2013

A new Platinum Reserve Package includes dark chrome accents for the 20-inch rims, grille, and outside mirror housing. Now standard are satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, illuminated vanity mirrors, 4-way power-adjustable passenger seat, and dual 7-inch DVD monitors (in the Family Entertainment System).
