2022 Mazda CX-5 Expert Review

Reviewed by Kelly Lin

Other compact crossovers may be more spacious, but the 2022 Mazda CX-5 is a top pick for drivers who prioritize performance. Updates for the new model year, including a revised suspension, make it even more fun to drive. The CX-5 is positioned above the CX-30 and below the three-row CX-9 in Mazda's crossover lineup.

What's New

  • AWD is standard across the lineup
  • Revised six-speed automatic transmission
  • Updated suspension promises reduced noise, vibration, and harshness
  • Refreshed exterior design with updated grille, headlights, taillights, and wheels
  • The 2.5 Turbo model, formerly Grand Touring Reserve, receives black exterior and red interior accents
  • Redesigned seats
  • Mazda Intelligent Drive Select for changing drive modes at the press of a switch

What We Think

Improvements Mazda made to the CX-5 for the new model year seem to have paid off. In our review of the CX-5 Turbo AWD Signature, we praised the updated suspension and the new seats. Steering feel is responsive, although on the heavier side.

Despite the upgrades, the CX-5 has its downsides. The instrument cluster in front of the driver feels dated, for one thing. We wished the CX-5 felt more refined at idle, too. Although our tester featured strong acceleration, we'd recommend the non-turbo model for its superior fuel economy and range.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The Mazda CX-5 continues with two engine options, both displacing 2.5 liters. The non-turbo unit makes 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. The upgraded turbo delivers 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, or 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque when running on 93 octane fuel. In MotorTrend testing, the naturally aspirated model accelerated from a stop to 60 mph in slightly over 8.0 seconds, while turbocharged models have hit the mark in as little as 6.1 seconds.

Mazda has revised the standard six-speed automatic transmission to make it more responsive. Moving forward, all CX-5s come standard with AWD. Fuel economy is rated by the EPA at 22/27 mpg.

Safety Ratings and Features

The NHTSA gave the 2022 Mazda CX-5 a five-star overall safety rating. This score includes four stars in the front and side crash tests, and five stars in the rollover test. The Mazda CX-5 was named a 2022 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS, earning Good scores in all crash categories. Standard safety features on the 2022 CX-5  include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Technology

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 continues to feature a standard 10.3-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher-end trims get a head-up display. In addition to standard USB ports, a wireless charging pad is on the options list. A 10-speaker Bose sound system is available.

What Is the CX-5 2.5 Turbo Signature?

Buyers looking for premium touches may want to check out the 2.5 Turbo Signature trim. Equipped with the upgraded turbocharged engine, this model also features body-color exterior cladding and bright silver finished wheels. Inside, you'll find Nappa leather upholstery and genuine wood trim.
