2016 Mazda CX-3 Expert Review

Reviewed by Stefan Ogbac

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is a new addition to the range. As Mazda's entry-level crossover, the CX-3 slots below the larger CX-5.

Vehicle Summary

The 2016 Mazda CX-3 is a small, two-row crossover available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations. Like the CX-5, Mazda6, and Mazda3, the CX-3 features the full suite of Skyactiv technologies and uses a lengthened version of the platform used in the upcoming Mazda2 subcompact.

Overview

A 2.0-liter I-4 with 146 hp and 146 lb-ft is the only engine available in the 2016 CX-3 and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is excellent with front drive models rated at 29/35 mpg city/highway while opting for all-wheel drive drops those numbers down to 27/32 mpg.

Safety

Available driver safety aids include lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic forward emergency braking, and rear cross-traffic alert. However, active driver safety aids are only available in the range-topping Grand Touring trim via the i-ACTIVSENSE package.

Trims, Packages, and What's Standard

Standard features included in the base Sport model include Bluetooth connectivity, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, USB input jack, rearview camera, a seven-inch touchscreen with commander knob controls and Mazda Connect infotainment system with internet radio connectivity. Stepping up to the Touring grade adds heated exterior mirrors, 16-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker audio system, leatherette upholstery, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, and a power moonroof. The range-topping Grand Touring trim adds LED headlights with adaptive lighting, LED foglights and daytime running lights, navigation, head-up display, paddle shifters, heated front seats, automatic climate control, 18-inch alloy wheels, and leather/suede upholstery.

What We Think

Thanks to its lightness and small size, the 2016 CX-3 handles well and is fun to drive on a twisty mountain road. In a First Drive review, we said that the CX-3 handles as expected of a Mazda, with well-controlled body motions, quick response, and excellent steering. The cabin's fit and finish is another strong point thanks to the extensive use of soft-touch materials and tasteful contrasting colors. Although space for passengers up front is generous, the rear seats are best for small adults and children due to the limited head- and legroom. Additionally, cargo space is also limited due to the crossover's swoopy exterior styling.
