2014 Kia Soul Expert Review

Vehicle Overview

Kia probably didn't think the Soul would be such a hit when it was first introduced as a 2010 model, but the box car has garnered lots of attention with its funky good looks, and a genius campaign that featured old-school dancing hamsters. While the Soul has been a blessing to the Korean automaker (it's one of the top-selling models) it's been bad news for competitors such as the Scion xB and the now-discontinued Honda Element. The 2014 Kia Soul four-door has been redesigned inside and out, with greater fuel efficiency, revised styling, and a large assortment of options.

The front-drive five-passenger hatchback (or wagon) is available in three trim levels with nomenclature just as funky as its styling (base, +, and !). The base model comes with a 1.6-liter I-4 that produces 130 hp at 6300 rpm and 118 lb-ft at 4850 rpm. A six-speed manual transmission is standard while a six-speed automatic is optional. The higher trim models come equipped with a 2.0-liter I-4 that now utilizes GDI technology to produce 164 hp and 151 lb-ft. The Soul is EPA-rated at 25/30 mpg city/highway for models equipped with the 1.6-liter mill, while more powerful 2.0-liter Soul is rated at 24/29 mpg for models with a third pedal and 23/28 mpg for those with the automatic. The Eco Package benefits those looking to increase efficiency, as at it adds fuel-saving features like an automatic engine stop-start system, an upgraded battery and low-rolling-resistance tires. However, this package seems to make a difference on the base model with the 1.6-liter engine, as it adds 1 mpg on both the city and highway.

Other funky and cool Kia Soul options include tri-color lights around the speakers that pulsate to the beat of the music. For those who truly like to make a statement, expect at least one or two special-edition 2014 Kia Soul models.

What's New for 2014

The 2014 Soul is all-new, which means it gets more interior room, more premium features, improved driving dynamics and an exciting new design that mirrors the funky Track'ster concept. The Soul's 2.0-liter engine has also been updated with GDI technology.
