2014 Jeep Compass Expert Review

Reviewed by Christian Seabaugh

Vehicle Overview

While the mechanically related Jeep Patriot targets men, the 2014 Jeep Compass is the last model year of the compact crossover that was originally focused on attracting more women buyers to the off-roading brand. Other than a successful face-lift, the Compass hasn't changed very much. The Jeep's base engine is a 2.0-liter I-4 that makes 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque, with a 2.4-liter I-4 that makes 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque optional. The Compass is available with a five-speed manual, a CVT, and for 2014, a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, with available all-wheel drive (including an off-road capable unit).

As you'd expect, the 2014 Jeep Compass doesn't really impress. "Getting up to speed on the open highway is less than optimal in a vehicle of this size, and lagging throttle response made quick lane changes a bit daring to try. The CVT2 was painfully whinnying at open throttle while passing," we wrote. Though we noted that the Compass did have some cool features, like its tailgate-ready audio system, we ultimately concluded that, "While the revamped 2011 front grille design makes the 'ute look like its older, larger sibling, it still has some catching up to do to be a real competitor in the crossover segment."

For 2014, the Jeep Compass gets a new six-speed automatic transmission to hopefully win over buyers who won't drive with a manual and are turned off by the CVT. Other changes include minor interior and exterior tweaks, and new trim.

New for 2014

In addition to the new six-speed automatic in the 2014 Compass, the Jeep receives a few other tweaks. The Compass Latitude and Limited models get chrome grille slats, while Limited models also get revised headlights. The new Compass also gets smoked taillights and painted mirror caps. On the safety front, seat-mounted side airbags are now standard and a backup camera is available.
