2026 GMC Terrain Expert Review

Reviewed by Billy Rehbock

GMC’s entry-level model is more appealing than ever. The third-generation Terrain arrived for 2025, and its lineup is finally complete for 2026 with the addition of the off-road AT4 and luxurious Denali trims. GMC has yet to announce full information on the 2026 Terrain, but we anticipate that most of its cosmetics and features will carry over for existing trims. Rivals include other small SUVs such as the Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester.

What’s New

  • Off-road-oriented AT4 trim
  • Luxurious range-topping Denali model

What We Think

The 2026 GMC Terrain appears to offer the rugged styling and upscale appointments it needs to differentiate itself in the highly competitive compact SUV class. GMC has made significant efforts to enhance its entry-level model’s standard offerings, too, equipping the Terrain with large displays and plentiful active safety features.

We can glean some driving impressions from the 2026 GMC Terrain’s cousin from the Chevrolet side of the General Motors family. The Terrain shares a platform and powertrain with the Chevy Equinox, which has impressed us with newly refined transmission options. Based on our time with Chevrolet’s compact SUV, we also expect that the GMC’s ride and handling will improve over the prior incarnation of the Terrain.

GMC offers additional trims for 2026, equipping the Terrain AT4 with off-road hardware as an upgrade over the basic Elevation model. Those in search of a more luxurious SUV can spring for the top-level Denali model, which emphasizes luxury and comfort. We’re looking forward to getting behind the wheel to test the new GMC Terrain for ourselves.

Performance and MPGs

All versions of the 2026 GMC Terrain receive a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but output varies depending on drivetrain layout. Both FWD and AWD variants of the Terrain produce 175 hp, but torque is limited to 184 lb-ft with FWD and increases to 203 lb-ft with AWD. Transmissions vary depending on layout, as well; the FWD Terrain features a CVT automatic while the AWD version receives an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Based on our test data for the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox AWD RS, we don’t expect the 2026 GMC Terrain to be very quick. Anticipate 0–60 mph to take about 9.0 seconds. Fuel economy should be similar to that of the Equinox, as well. We suspect the 2026 Terrain will be rated in the range of 24–26/29–28 mpg city/highway depending on powertrain and drive layout.

Safety Features

GMC outfits the 2026 Terrain with a long list of standard safety features. The roster includes blind-zone steering assist, automatic rear braking for cross traffic, reverse automatic braking, and side bicyclist alert. Adaptive cruise control should help make highway commuting easier. An enhanced automatic emergency braking identifies pedestrians, bicyclists, and hazards in intersections. Other tech includes lane keep assist and automatic high-beams.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The 2026 GMC Terrain’s interior is comparable to its rivals. Front-row legroom is generous, although second-row space falls between that of the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Cargo capacity is on the smaller side of the segment.

2026 GMC Terrain Elevation vs. AT4 vs. Denali: What's the Difference?

The default version of the 2026 GMC Terrain is the Elevation trim, which is the well-equipped entry-level model. A 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is paired with a CVT and FWD or an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. Standard features include a 15.0-inch infotainment display, an 11.0-inch driver display, Google built-in applications, and heated front seats.

To get the most off-road-capable version of the 2026 GMC Terrain, choose the AT4 trim. This model receives a selectable AT4-exclusive Terrain mode, a ride height lift, a protective metal underbody shield, red front recovery hooks, and 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires. All-wheel drive and hill descent control are standard. As a bonus, GMC bundles animated headlights and taillights into the Terrain AT4’s standard features list.

For a more luxurious spin on the 2026 GMC Terrain, opt for the Denali model. This variant of the compact SUV receives heated front and rear seats, 19-inch wheels or an available 20-inch option, GMC’s Smart Frequency dampers tuned for ride comfort, all-wheel drive, and hill descent control. Like the AT4, the Denali gets animated headlights and taillights.
