2013 Dodge Charger Expert Review

Reviewed by Staff Writer

The 2013 Dodge Charger demonstrates that one doesn't always have to make compromises. The five-passenger Charger fits the bill as both a comfortable family sedan or as a high-performance sport sedan in SRT trim especially. Just because you've grown up and started a family doesn't mean you have to give up your boy-racer antics, and with more power on tap for certain Ralleye models and an aggressive exterior appearance, especially in the special edition Black Top and Daytona models, you definitely won't have to behind the wheel of the Charger.

During our 2012 Motor Trend Car of the Year competition, judges gushed about the Charger's new eight-speed automatic transmission and just how much of an impact it had on the car's personality, transmitting more smoothly the 292 to 300 hp produced by the Charger's 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, depending on configuration. Although it looks large and in charge, the Charger also achieves respectable fuel economy figures thanks to the eight-speed. Models equipped with that gearbox achieve 19/31 city/highway for rear-drive models, while all-wheel drive models achieve 18/27 mpg. Meanwhile, a five-speed automatic continues to be paired with the beefier Hemi engines, a 370-hp 5.7-liter V-8 or the 470-hp 6.7-liter V-8 that comes in the Charger SRT8. In the future, we hope the eight-speed becomes available across the range.

With a roomy cabin, a host of standard equipment, and sumptuous appointments, the Charger becomes an even more viable option for the family man with its 2013 IIHS Top Safety Pick designation. All-wheel-drive has also become an option for 2013 with the exception of the SRT model.

New for 2013

The 2013 Charger is available with an AWD Sport model, as well as in special edition Black Top and Daytona appearance packages. The SRT model is now available with launch control. The UConnect navigation system has been upgraded with enhanced 3-D images and route guidance graphics. New exterior paint colors include Billet Silver Metallic, Clear Coat, Copperhead Pearl Coat, Granite Crystal Pearl Coat, Jazz Pearl Coat, and Phantom Black Tri-Coat.
