2015 Chevrolet Express Expert Review

OnStar with Turn-by-Turn navigation is now standard, as is a 110-volt power outlet.

Vehicle Summary

The 2015 Chevrolet Express is a large commercial vehicle that's available in passenger or cargo variants and in regular or extended length variants. In passenger configuration, the van can accommodate 12 to 15 passengers depending on whether the regular or extended length version is chosen.

Overview

Three V-8 engines are offered in the 2015 Express: a 4.8-liter rated at 285 hp and 295 lb-ft, a CNG-capable 6.0-liter with 329 hp and 373 lb-ft (282 hp/320 lb-ft on CNG), and 6.6-liter turbodiesel making 260 hp and 525 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic transmission is the only gearbox available on all three engines. Depending on the drivetrain configuration, the Express can tow up to 10,000 pounds when properly equipped. Cargo variants are the most spacious with 239.7 cubic feet of cargo volume on the 2500 Series and 284.4 cubic feet on the 3500 Series. Max payload for the 2500 Series is 3,247 pounds in the regular length variant and 3,013 in the extended length variant. The larger 3500 Series can carry 4,120 pounds in standard guise and 3,899 in extended length. Passenger variants of the Express are less spacious at 92.1 cubic feet of cargo volume with seats installed and 216.2 cubic feet without them on the 2500 Series. The larger 3500 Series can carry 127.2 cubic feet of cargo volume with seats in place and 252 cubic feet without.

Safety

Dual front, front-side, and side-curtain airbags are standard on the 2016 Express.

Trims, Packages, and What's Standard

Standard features included in the base Express include AM/FM radio with MP3 compatibility, and vinyl covered bucket seats. Available extra features include navigation with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, keyless entry, cloth upholstery, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

What We Think

Although we haven't tested the Chevrolet Express, we did review the GMC Savana, which is identical to the Express. In a 2011 First Test review, we said that the van, especially when equipped with the 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8, provides plenty of power and responds quickly, making it easy to pass on the freeway. However, the steering isn't precise and the interior is sparse even for our test vehicle, which stickered at over $40,000. Standard features are also minimal, making the Express less of a value compared to newer competitors like the Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster.
