Vehicle Overview

Before the Volvo XC60 came along, the Swedish automaker's most critical vehicle was the seven-passenger XC90. Touting impressive driving dynamics, utility, and power, we named the XC90 the 2003 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year, saying, "This innovative machine drives comfortably like a sedan, tows like a pickup, off-roads like sport/ute, and moves bulky cargo or as many as seven people like a minivan."

Ten years later, people would forget the XC90 is still even on sale, as the SUV is overdue for a revamp. Until that happens though, the XC90 is solely powered by a 3.2-liter inline-six that produces 240 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque, paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The entry-level 3.2 model comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, heated mirrors, headlight washers, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a sunroof, roof rails, rear parking sensors and keyless entry. Convenience features include dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, leather seats, Bluetooth, and an eight-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.

The 2014 Volvo XC90 R-Design adds some more sport with distinctive styling cues inside and out, 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive HID headlights, sport-tuned suspension and steering, a self-leveling rear suspension, unique leather upholstery, unique gauges and a sport steering wheel. The aging XC90, however, does not offer as many advanced safety features as others in the lineup, however, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick.

What's New for 2014

We expect the XC90 get a major design overhaul by the end of the 2014 calendar year, but it's not happening this year. The 2014 XC90 SUV gets minimal updates including a quick-fold front passenger seat, digital compass, grocery bag holder, new carpets, and a new C-Pillar emblem.
