If you like the Volkswagen GTI but wish it had a bit more Swedish flair, consider the 2013 Volvo C30. Introduced in 2008, the C30 doesn't enjoy the name recognition or sales success as the GTI, but its styling, performance, and value is not far off from the hot hatch from Germany.
Under the hood is a turbocharged, 2.5-liter inline-five making 227-hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is available, but enthusiasts will want to opt for the six-speed manual gearbox, which better suits the sporty nature of the front-wheel drive hatch. Despite the sporty engine, the C30 still achieves a respectable 21/30 mpg city/highway when equipped with the automatic (the manual gets 1 mpg less on the highway). The C30 also maintains Volvo's reputation for safety. Among the standard list of safety items include airbags, whiplash protection, electronic brake assist, and stability control.
The C30 is offered in as a base T5 or R-Design model. The latter includes a sport-tuned suspension and a number of visual upgrades, including front and rear spoilers, body kit, sport pedals, 18-inch rims, and R-Design badges. Volvo offers Premier, Premier Plus, and Platinum trim levels. Depending on trim, buyers can add a moonroof, navigation, power adjustable seats, and HID lights. Inside, the layout and design is straight forward, with a dashboard that incorporates a unique "floating" center stack.
New for 2013
The C30 adds a number of new standard features including rain-sensing windshield wipers, headlight washers, and synthetic motor oil that increases service intervals to every 10,000 miles. Premier and Premier Plus trim levels are added and new exterior paint choices include Titanium Grey Metallic and Electric Silver Metallic.
