Vehicle Overview
Now in its fourth generation, the 2014 Toyota RAV4 represents a slight return to its roots. Unlike its predecessor, the 2014 no longer offers third-row seating or an option for a more powerful six-cylinder engine. Instead, the lone powertrain choice is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 176 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic.
"The gear spacing on the six-speed automatic is near ideal, with short, closely spaced lower ratios, and an extra-tall sixth gear for relaxed, economical highway cruising," we noted a recent test. The front-drive model is EPA-rated at 24/31 mpg city/highway, which is in line with most of the competition, though the new Nissan Rogue and its continuously variable transmission is more efficient at 26/33 mpg. The all-wheel-drive RAV4, which features an advanced torque-vectoring system, is rated at 22/29 mpg.
The 2014 RAV4 is available in three trim levels starting with the base LE model, which comes standard with keyless entry, backup camera, privacy glass, Bluetooth connectivity, and a telescopic steering wheel. Moving up to the midrange XLE model adds a moonroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, and roof rack. Finally, the Limited model adds a navigation (optional on the XLE), premium audio, SofTex seating surfaces, a Smart Key system, and available advanced safety technology including a blind-spot monitor, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams.
New for 2014
XLE models add sunvisor extenders and chrome interior door handles. Meanwhile, the Limited model can be had with a Technology Package that includes a blind-spot monitor, lane departure alert system, and automatic high beams.
