2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Expert Review
Reviewed by Bob Hernandez
How does one make the Grand Cherokee grander? By adding 11.4 inches of length, tossing in a third row, and tacking an "L" to the end of the model name. The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee L faces stiff competition in the three-row SUV segment, with popular rivals including the Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot .
What's New
Deliveries of the Grand Cherokee L began for the 2021 model year, and for 2024, it is virtually a carryover. The only change is new standard 18-inch wheels on the Limited trim.
What We Think
To some extent, we get why the 2024 Grand Cherokee L comes with such a high premium. Both powertrains provide plenty of useful grunt, channeled through an intelligent eight-speed automatic transmission that delivers power smoothly. It rides great—even better with the available air suspension—and off paved surfaces it's sure-footed like a Jeep should be. That refinement extends into the cabin, which is both quiet and upscale. Indeed, on higher trim levels, the Grand Cherokee L is legitimately luxurious.
Downsides include a smallish third row and active driver assistance features in need of updated logic. And then there's the high price, too. That said, you'll be hard pressed to find a better three-row off-roader than the Grand Cherokee L.
Performance and MPGs
Every 2024 Grand Cherokee L receives an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive models are offered only with the 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V-6 powertrain, which is the standard engine for the all-wheel drive model and the only propulsion for the smaller standard Grand Cherokee. Power ratings are 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque.
For more grunt, there's an available 5.6-liter non-turbo V-8 paired with AWD. It develops 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity for Grand Cherokee L equipped with the V-6 is 6,200 pounds, and with the V-8, that grows to 7,200 pounds.
Fuel economy is generally in the same ballpark as non-hybrid competitors. The 2024 Grand Cherokee L returns 18-19/25-26 mpg city/highway with the V-6 and 14/22 mpg with the V-8.
Safety Ratings and Features
Curiously, NHTSA has evaluated the longer Grand Cherokee L and 4xe plug-in hybrid but not the standard model. It gives the 2024 Grand Cherokee L a five-star overall safety rating, the administration's highest, with five stars in every category except rollover resistance, where it received four stars.
Standard active driver assistance features include lane keeping and lane centering technology, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, and automatic headlights. Automatic high-beams, driver attention warning, forward parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, a 360-degree camera, and semi-autonomous parking are unlocked on higher trim levels.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
The 2024 Grand Cherokee L is offered in six- and seven-passenger configuration. Second-row legroom compares favorably to the 2023 Ford Explorer, and there's more space behind the middle row than in the 2024 Kia Telluride. As is typical in this class, though, room is limited in the third row.
Technology
Even the Grand Cherokee L Laredo base model comes stacked with standard features. Every one boasts an 8.4-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 10.3-inch gauge cluster screen, power driver's seat, six speakers, a dozen USB ports, and dual 12-volt power outlets.
The standard touchscreen grows to 10.1 inches on the Limited, which also receives a power front passenger seat, heated first and second rows, remote start, and a power liftgate. The rearmost door goes hand-free on the Overland model that is also standard with 10-speaker Alpine premium audio, power-folding side mirrors, power-tilting and -telescoping steering column, and an electronic release to fold the second row remotely.
Summit models get standard front seat massagers, and optional niceties include a 10.3-inch front passenger touchscreen, twin 10.1-inch rear entertainment screens, head-up display, wireless phone charging, and a 20-speaker McIntosh premium sound system.
