2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD / 3500HD Expert Review

Reviewed by Stefan Ogbac

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD receives an updated MyLink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration on the High Country trim, wireless phone charging, a remote locking tailgate, and a new digital steering assist system. Three new exterior colors have been added: Siren Red Tintcoat, Red Hot, and Butte Red Metallic.

Vehicle Summary

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD is the largest truck offered by Chevrolet, slotting above the Silverado 2500HD. The Silverado 3500HD is available in rear- or four-wheel drive configurations, three cab styles, single or dual-wheel setups, and two bed lengths.

Overview

Two engine options are available in the 2016 Silverado 3500HD, a gas 6.0-liter V-8 rated at 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque, and a diesel 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 with 397 hp and 765 lb-ft. Both engines are paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard and available features include a rearview camera, Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system with either a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, leather upholstery, alloy wheels up to 20 inches in diameter, navigation, a Bose premium audio system, and parking sensors. When properly equipped, the Silverado 3500HD can tow up to 23,300 pounds with the optional diesel engine.

Safety

The NHTSA and IIHS haven't crash tested the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD. Available active safety features include forward collision warning and lane departure warning.

What We Think

In a 2015 First Drive, we said that the Silverado 3500HD's multimedia interface is easy to use and that its interior is much improved with high-quality materials. The available diesel engine easily pulls the heavy truck and doesn't struggle even when its loaded with payload or towing. Despite the improved ride quality, the Silverado 3500HD still doesn't ride as well as a half-ton truck such as the smaller Silverado 1500.

Cool Fact

The High Country trim is the only variant of the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD to come standard with saddle brown leather upholstery.
