2016 Ford Super Duty Expert Review

Reviewed by Staff Writer

After a 2015 refresh, changes to the 2016 Ford F-350 are minimal. A rapid-heat supplemental cab heater is now standard in cold-weather states, while new available features include four-corner LED warning strobe light kit and rearview camera and prep kit on certain models. Shadow Black and Race Red replace Tuxedo Black and Vermillion Red on the exterior paint palette, respectively.

Vehicle Summary

The Ford F-350 Super Duty pickup sits above the light-duty F-150 and F-250 Super Duty in the automaker's truck lineup.

Overview

Ford offers two engines in the Super Duty pickup. The base engine is a 6.2-liter V-8 gas engine making 385 hp at 5,750 rpm and 405 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. A second-generation 6.7-liter Powerstroke turbodiesel V-8 making 440 hp and 860 lb-ft is optional. Both engines are backed by the automaker's 6R140 TorqShift SelectShift six-speed automatic transmission with standard tow/haul mode. The F-350 Super Duty can tow up to 26,500 pounds with a fifth-wheel/gooseneck hitch and has a 35,000-pound gross combined weight rating.

The 2016 F-350 Super Duty is available in six trim levels (XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum), three cab sizes (regular, extended and crew), two bed lengths (6'5" and 8'), and with either single or dual rear wheels.

Safety

Standard safety features include front and side-curtain airbags, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, and crash severity sensor. Driver assistance equipment includes Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control.

What We Think

Although we liked the F-450 Super Duty pickup (the F-350 pickup's stronger stablemate), we said in our 2015 Motor Trend Truck of the Year competition: "So why not Truck of the Year? Aside from the biblically potent engine (and super cool 19.5-inch semi-truck wheels!) it does nothing against our criteria. Concludes Seabaugh, 'Aside from its powertrain, the F-450 looks and feels dated. '"
