The Downshift: Designer Ian Callum on His Car Collection

A car designer’s job is to draw cars that we, as automotive enthusiasts, desire. Few have rendered as much lust-worthy sheetmetal as ex-Jaguar (and Aston Martin, and Ford) designer Ian Callum. Angus MacKenzie sat down for a Zoom discussion of the cars he himself has been compelled to buy, from a 1930s Ford hotrod to a beloved Mini.

To kick off the YouTube video series, hosts Kevin Tetz and John McGann immerse themselves in the task of swapping a Gen 3 Hemi into a 1972 Dodge Challenger. And this isn't just any old Hemi—we're dropping a 707-horsepower Hellcat into the car and putting one of Tremec's brand-new TKX five-speed transmissions behind it. The Challenger is also getting a brand new coilover suspension and a brake upgrade. The goal is to make it run and drive like a new Hellcat-powered Challenger, but with the classy good looks of the original E-Body.

Built for just $17K, TreadWear creates an IMSA Camel GT race team that never was. Take one look at TredWear's "Translammed" 1977 Pontiac Trans Am and you'll be smitten. You'll immediately notice the wide look of period-correct IMSA bodywork from the late 1970s/early 1980s and a subtle but obvious reduction in the Trans Am's wheelbase, aided by a slammed stance and an arsenal of aero aids including some crafty and functional turbine wheel covers. Accompanying all these vintage-style mods is a tasty complement of sponsor graphics in the IMSA style that some will no doubt label as kitsch, but it's all in good fun and in the TredWear tradition of pulling at the heartstrings of those who fondly remember the era.

HOT ROD Drag Week 2025 once again put the toughest street cars in the country to the test. Over five days and more than 600 miles, racers had to prove they could drive their cars on the street and still lay down serious numbers at the track. From six-second Unlimited cars to 10-second cruisers, the competition was stacked. In the end, Ned Dunphy’s 3,000-hp Dodge Viper was the best of the field, averaging 6.17 at 247 mph to set a new record and lock down the title of America’s Fastest Street Car.
