Is off-roading really the place for an electric vehicle and are off-roaders ready for one? Bollinger Motors thinks so, and this B1 is the result.

Looking a bit like an old Land Rover Defender, the Bollinger B1 is the brainchild of Robert Bollinger and was developed, designed, and engineered by him and his staff in Hobart, New York. Bollinger, who earned an industrial design degree from Carnegie Mellon University, calls his effort “The world’s first all-electric, all-wheel-drive off/on-road sport utility truck.”

The all-wheel drive comes from the fact that the B1 uses two drive motors, one for the front wheels and one for the rear, to provide propulsion to the electronically locking differentials. There’s also a pair of HI/LO range gearboxes, which provides a full 4x the torque multiplication in LO range. The top speed in the LO setting is 32 mph.

Electric cars are often thought of as slow, but the all-wheel-drive B1 produces (a stated) 360 hp, can do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 127 mph. It has a 50/50 weight balance, and the towing capacity is a claimed 6,000 pounds.

Which leads to the real question: How far will it go on a charge? The B1 has a 200 max mile range before charging is required. That charging can be done with either 110 or 220 volts, with it taking 12 hours to fully charge (from fully depleted) in 110 and 7 hours with 220.

Bollinger will be at the 2017 SEMA show and promises that a B1 will be ready for testdrives, so look for an update soon.
