Judging by the on-track action at Sunday's Test-N-Tune session, we are in for a wild ride for all five days of HOT ROD Drag Week. After a brief delay after a late afternoon cloudburst, drag week competitors hit the track for a test session at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, just outside of St. Louis.

We saw several 8-second passes, a handful of wheelies, plenty of tire smoke, and a minimal amount of carnage, thankfully. Raceway officials had the track on point, cars were putting the power down with gusto.

Drag Week officially starts on Monday. Be sure to watch the livestream on MotorTrend's YouTube channel, and follow HOT ROD on Facebook and Instagram for more behind-the-scenes action all week.

FULL HOT ROD DRAG WEEK COVERAGE

HOT ROD Drag Week is the ultimate test for street-legal drag racing cars: Not only do competitors have to race on four different tracks over five consecutive days, they have to drive their race car between each venue on specified routes, with photo checkpoints, that average over 1,000 miles throughout the week. What's more, racers can only use the tools and parts they can carry in their car or in their optional trailer—towed by the race car. Head to the MotorTrend YouTube channel to watch each day's live stream (and replays)!

A subscription to Car and Driver at age 10 set the stage for what would be John's career path. A voracious reader of car magazines and lover of all things automotive, he set out to learn as much as he could about cars. An automotive technology program provided the foundation, while fumbling around with large American sedans provided real world experience. Finally, a Bachelor of Science degree in photojournalism provided the focus. John accepted a five-month photography internship at Motor Trend magazine in 2003. Upon completion, he remained with the publishing company, managing a photo studio for 18 months before becoming photo editor for HOT ROD and Car Craft magazine. After three years on the production side, John accepted an editorial position at Car Craft in December 2006 and eventually became editor of Car Craft in 2014 and retained that position until March 2018 when he moved to HOT ROD as Executive Editor. He was promoted to Editor-in-Chief of HOT ROD in April 2019.
