Event Coverage: Volvos Across America

Here's what they did on their summer vacation

They came from the flood-controlled streets of Amsterdam and the tulip-filled fields of Holland's hinterlands with examples of their beloved marque, one of the two built in the moose-infested land of Sweden, to the gritty streets of New York, the clutch-eating hills of San Francisco, the dead-stop gridlock of Los Angeles, and the flyover country in between. Ninety-three vintage Volvos built from 1952 to 1973 (plus one 1993 240 from a Volvoniste whose older car broke down before the trip) descended on the storied road that belongs to Corvette, Route 66, in search of the ultimate Kerouac drive. They racked up one million kilometers in four weeks. Thirty-five-year-old V44 Club of the Netherlands flew in parts from the homeland for this special anniversary celebration, just in case, but American Volvo drivers--those patched-elbow tweed-jacket-wearing college-town inhabitants--proved our country a friendly refuge, says president Andrea Van Kats. And when they finished, they finished in an unlikely place for a car brand raised on snow and ice, the California desert, where our photographer found them.
