Overview
Powered by a 188-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder mated to an electric motor and CVT transmission, the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid delivers an EPA-estimated 40/36 mpg city/highway and 88 MPGe. EV range is up to 20 miles, and charging takes 2.5 hours with a 240V charger, or seven hours with a 110V outlet.
The base Fusion Energi comes equipped with heated front seats, leather upholstery, the new Sync 3 infotainment system, standard rearview camera, and Bluetooth connectivity. The Titanium model builds on the feature content, adding a 12-speaker Sony sound system and rear spoiler, while Navigation and a moonroof are standalone options.
The all-new top-of-the-line Platinum model adds a Cocoa leather interior trim on the instrument and door trim panels, while the steering wheel is hand-wrapped in Venetian leather. Exterior features include a unique grille with a Magnetic paint finish and 19-inch polished wheels.

The 2017 Ford Fusion Energi is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ winner, and earned an NHTSA 5 Star Overall safety rating in 2016. In the IIHS safety tests, the Fusion Energi plug-in earned a "good" rating, while the optional front crash prevention earned a "superior" rating.
For 2017, the Fusion Energi gains pedestrian detection system and hands-free parallel and perpendicular parking. The available Blind Spot Information System adds cross-traffic alert. The Fusion Energi plug-in also comes with standard front, side, and curtain airbags, dusk-sensing headlamps, daytime running lights, ABS brakes, brake assist, adaptive cruise control, and enhanced active park assist with forward sensing.
What We Think
The 2017 Ford Fusion Energy plug-in hybrid sedan may not be the fastest vehicle on the market, but offers great fuel economy and a 20-mile EV range. Acceleration with combined gas-electric power isn't as quick as other hybrid models, and changing lanes on the highway takes more thought as speed builds gradually instead of offering an immediate response.
While on the street, the Fusion Energi handles better than most of its competition, with a good steering response. The brakes are a bit touchy but inspire confidence for abrupt stops. With the lithium-ion battery pack housed in the trunk, cargo space is limited to just 8.2 cubic feet of usable space, but with the rear 60/40 split-folding rear seats, the limited space can be slightly expanded.

The Fusion Energi shares its hybrid powertrain with the Ford C-Max, which were the first two plug-in hybrids from the automaker.
